Syros, (Siros or Syra) is a Greek island in the Cyclades, in the Aegean Sea located south-east of Athens. Syros is the capital of the the Cyclades. Paros was known for its fine white marble, which gave rise to the term Parian to describe marble or china of similar qualities. Abandoned marble quarries and mines can be found on the island, but Paros today is primarily known as a popular tourist spot. Naxos is the most fertile island of the Cyclades.
