Lesbos (Lesvos, Mytilini) lies in the far east of the Aegean sea, facing the Turkish coast. The Ancient Greek poetess Sappho was born on the island of Lesbos. Later Greeks included her in the list of nine lyric poets. Chios is the fifth largest of the Greek islands. Archaeological research on Chios has found evidence that the island has been inhabited since at least the Neolithic era. Samos was a particularly rich and powerful city-state in ancient times.
