The Ionian Islands are a group of seven islands (Eptanisa) and a number of islets scattered over the Ionian Sea to the west of Greece. Kerkyra (Corfu) is connected to the history of Greece from the beginning of Greek mythology. Zakynthos (Zante) was inhabited from the Neolithic Age and was mentioned by the famous ancient Greek poet Homer.
