The Ionian Islands are a group of seven islands (Eptanisa) and a number of islets scattered over the Ionian Sea to the west of Greece. Kerkyra (Corfu) is connected to the history of Greece from the beginning of Greek mythology. Zakynthos (Zante) was inhabited from the Neolithic Age and was mentioned by the famous ancient Greek poet Homer. Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands and its most important period was the Mycenaean era. More at Greeka

The Ionian islands are traditionally called the Eptanisa (or Heptanese), i.e. “the Seven Islands.” The islands were settled by Greeks at an early date, possibly as early as 1200 BC. Ithaca was the name of the island home of Odysseus in the epic ancient Greek poem The Odyssey by Homer.
