The (Northern) Sporades are an archipelago along the east coast of Greece, northeast of Euboea (Evia or Halkida), in the Aegean Sea. It consists of 24 islands, four of which are permanently inhabited: Alonnisos, Skiathos, Skopelos and Skyros. Euboea (Evia) is the second largest Greek island in area and population, after Crete. The narrow Euripus Strait separates it from Boeotia in mainland Greece. Evia was believed to have originally formed part of the mainland, and to have been separated from it by an earthquake.
