Ikaria 1993 Forest Fire Monument
On Friday July 30, 1993 a huge forest fire erupted, raging out of control as the Icarians looked on in disbelief and helplessness.
The aftermath of its destruction claimed thirteen lives. The Pan-Icarian society for the protection of the forest against fires, (The Swallows of Athera), has taken the initiative for the construction of this monument.
It is considered by experts as one of the most impressive monuments in the Balkans. It is seven and a half meters high, made of Pendelic marble and copper. It is located four kilometers north of the port of Agios Kyrikos.
